David Whines has journeyed from engineering and building surveying to accounting, and Eagle Education has been with him every step of the way. Currently studying AAT Level 4, David has progressed from Level 2 through Level 4 with Eagle’s support, balancing work, family life, and study in a way that suits him perfectly.

From building sites to balance sheets

David’s route to accounting wasn’t straightforward. After working as an engineer and completing a master’s degree in building surveying, he spent six years in that field. When his father decided to retire from the family business, David stepped into his shoes as an accountant. Initially hesitant to follow in his father’s footsteps, David realised that accounting might be his true calling.

“Coming into accountancy has given me a broader view of business,” David shares. “My varied career background helps me see things from different angles, which I think is a real strength.”

Why Eagle?

For David, the flexibility and subscription-based model Eagle offers were key selling points. “When I first started studying, I was still working as a building surveyor,” David recalls. “I wanted something flexible that could fit around my work and home life. Eagle’s self-study model was the perfect fit.”

Eagle’s comprehensive resources, including access to Osborne Books Online, Moodle, and the Study Buddy tool, were invaluable. “Everything I needed was provided, and I could study at my own pace. I started during COVID, so classroom learning wasn’t an option, but Eagle’s setup worked perfectly for me,” he explains.

Balancing work, family, and study

Juggling three days of work and two to three days of study, along with raising two young children, is no small feat. David has made the most of Eagle’s flexibility, allowing him to cancel and restart his subscription and studies whenever needed.

“Over summer, when my son is off school, I can cancel my subscription,” he says. “It’s great knowing you’re not paying for something you’re not using, and it gives me peace of mind.”

Support when you need it

While David has leaned heavily on the materials provided, he’s also appreciated Eagle’s responsive support team. “If I’ve had a question, the academic team always comes back quickly. I’ve also enjoyed the little boosts from my mentor, like the emails congratulating me after passing an exam. It’s those small touches that keep you motivated” he says.

Looking ahead

David is considering pursuing ACCA in the future but plans to take a break after completing Level 4. “I enjoy learning, so I’ll probably come back to it,” he says. “And it’s great knowing Eagle supports further qualifications like ACCA. Their flexibility and resources make transitioning to higher levels seamless.”

Advice for new learners

David’s advice for those starting their accounting journey with Eagle is simple:

  • Use the mentors and academic support.
  • Develop a clear plan for your studies.
  • Make the most of both the Study Buddy and Osborne Books.

“The Study Buddy simplifies things, while the Osborne Books provide detailed explanations. Using them together has been really effective for me,” he explains.

Conclusion

David’s story is a testament to how Eagle’s flexibility, resources, and support can help learners from diverse backgrounds achieve their goals. Whether you’re starting a new career or advancing in your current one, Eagle offers a study method that works around your life.

For David, it’s been the perfect fit: “Eagle’s approach just works for me at this stage of my life. I couldn’t recommend it enough.”
