You could become an AAT licensed bookkeeper in less than one year

Stephen Wilson AATQB is celebrating being awarded professional recognition and status, as an AAT Licensed Bookkeeper, part way through his accounting studies.  What’s more, many of our students are achieving it in less than one year.

What is professional membership and why is it important?

Bookkeepers and accountants are entrusted to manage the financial affairs of businesses, so being technically competent to the highest standard is of paramount importance.

In the accounting profession, accounting bodies are responsible for acting in the public interest, by ensuring those that hold their qualifications are trained to the highest standard, and those that are awarded professional membership are committed to maintaining the highest standards throughout their career.

The Association of Accounting Technicians (AAT) is the UK’s leading awarding body for vocational accountants.  AAT’s qualifications and professional memberships are recognised in over 90 countries around the world.  So holding qualifications and membership publicises trust, credibility and professionalism to employers and clients, and is certainly something to be proud of.

How can you be awarded professional recognition and status?

Traditionally, AAT awarded professional recognition and status (designatory letters MAAT) to those that held the AAT Level 4 Accounting Qualification, as well as the equivalent of one year’s full time work experience.

More recently, AAT introduced the opportunity to be awarded professional recognition and status (designatory letters AATQB) to student members that have achieved the following AAT Level 3 Bookkeeping modules (or equivalent):

  • Advanced Bookkeeping
  • Final Accounts Preparation
  • Indirect Tax (VAT)

Members that want to set up their own business can apply to become Licenced Bookkeepers or Licenced Accountants.

Being self-employed is a dream come true

When Stephen purchased his AAT course, his goal was to give up a job that he didn’t enjoy and set up his own bookkeeping business.  Stephen took this courageous step after completing the AAT Level 2 Certificate in Accounting!  Once he’d achieved the relevant bookkeeping units at level 3, he was awarded professional recognition (AATQB) and became an AAT Licensed Bookkeeper.

You can do it too!

We have summarised the different qualification routes in a document which can be downloaded below.  The average student could achieve AAT Associate Bookkeeping Membership (AATQB), studying part time, in under a year!
